A flood is defined as an overflow of water over land that is usually dry. In the US, flooding is usually due to prolonged rainfall, heavy rains in a short span of time, and ice or debris clogging a water body, causing it to overflow onto the land nearby. Dams can develop problems that cause flooding. Buildings can be flooded by overburdened or clogged sewage systems, burst pipes, or dam failures.
Flood damage includes different types of harm due to flooding, including effects on individuals, buildings, and property or belongings. Flood water is considered to be contaminated, meaning the clean-up after a flood is important but risky. What are the effects of flood damage?
1. Health risks
Flood water can contain pathogens and chemical contaminants, affecting the health of persons who come into contact with it. If left standing for 24 to 48 hours, mold growth can be secondary to flood damage. Mold and its spores can affect the air quality.
2. Structural damage
Water can affect the integrity of floors, walls, ceilings, furniture, furnishing, etc. Flooding can also damage foundations which can have serious consequences. Water removal is essential, and specialized equipment makes it easier. SERVPRO of Central & West Plano follows a multi-step process, including water removal.
3. Damage to the electrical system
Flooding may cause electrical hazards that can lead to a fire, if not noticed and carelessly handled. Getting a professional to evaluate the electrical system and appliances for safety is essential before anything is switched on and operated.
4. Mold
If floodwater is not removed and dried meticulously, mold can grow easily. Mold thrives in moist areas and can lead to persistent unpleasant smells. Professional flood restoration services like SERVPRO of Central & West Plano use industrial-grade equipment to dry flooded homes and minimize the risk of mold growth.
5. Damage to belongings and contents of a home
Flooding can damage personal belongings like documents, clothing, electronics, etc. Some of these may have to be replaced.
What to do when affected by flood damage?

What to look for when hiring a flood restoration service?
Blog Summary: SERVPRO® of Central & West Plano shares what to look for when hiring a flood restoration service.
Flooding is common in the United States and a costly threat to businesses and homes. Hurricanes, tropical storms, thunderstorms, heavy rains, and snow come to mind as sources of flood damage. However, flooding can occur due to clogged or overloaded sewer and drainage systems, changes in urbanization, and dam failures. A home can also be flooded by a leaky roof or faulty plumbing.
If clean water results in flood damage, homeowners may be able to handle it if the flood damage is minimal. However, in most cases, flood damage is adequately managed by professional flood restoration services. SERVPRO of Central & West Plano is a storm damage specialist that provides flood damage repair services in Deerfield, Texas, and surrounding areas. This company has the advantage of being a local company with access to national resources across the country. In this article, SERVPRO of Central & West Plano shares some tips for choosing the right flood restoration service.
Factors to consider when choosing flood restoration services
1. Experience verification
Flood restoration professionals with experience in flood restoration are able to come up with quick and cost-effective solutions. Experienced technicians and companies that have been in the industry for a long time are likely to be more reliable. SERVPRO is a cleaning and restoration brand founded in 1967. They provide all new franchise owners with Initial Franchise Training, which helps them share knowledge gained from years of experience in the restoration industry.
2. Check if flood restoration services are insured
It is safe to check that the company offers workers’ compensation and general liability. Before hiring a company, it's helpful to review its policies in case of accidents or other issues. Professional water damage restoration contractors typically have safety protocols in place and take necessary precautions during their work.
3. Training and certification
Ideally, flood restoration technicians should be certified and licensed. Certification from the Institute of Inspection Cleaning and Restoration Certification (IICRC) is something that must be included on the must-have list when hiring a water damage repair professional. Personnel at SERVPRO of Central and West Plano study IICRC standards and best practices. They can pursue self-paced voluntary programs. A certificate is awarded upon completion of the course and exam. SERVPRO of Central and West Plano employees can also complete web-based training to keep franchise employees up-to-date on industry standards and maintain professional quality.
4. Availability
Flood damage can occur suddenly and without warning. Natural disasters can cause flooding in multiple places in the area simultaneously. Time is of the essence when remediating water damage, as delays lead to worsening damage and secondary water damage. Therefore, it is important to choose a flood restoration service with sufficient resources that can access the affected area swiftly to deal with flood damage. SERVPRO of Central & West Plano is a local company providing rapid flood cleanup services in Deerfield, Texas. There are also resources accessible from the franchise's extensive network. Blog Summary: Some steps that homeowners can take after a flood are listed by SERVPRO of Central & West Plano, an expert flood damage restoration company.
Water damage from floods is a common hazard in the US. In high-risk areas, there is a 1 in 4 chance of flood, as per data from the NFIP (National Flood Insurance Program). Tropical storms, thunderstorms, heavy rain, or snow are all reasons for floods. Flooding can also happen for reasons like when sewage systems are blocked or overburdened and dam failures.
Floods can cause loss of life, financial loss, structural damage to buildings, contamination of water, etc. After a flood, the seeping water can cause flood damage. Flood restoration service is available in Deerfield, TX, from SERVPRO of Central & West Plano. This company has a stellar reputation for providing fire and water cleanup and restoration. In this article, some steps that homeowners can take after a flood are shared by SERVPRO of Central & West Plano.
All instructions from authorities must be followed after any flood. Families must evacuate their homes when instructed and return only when they have been allowed. Using masks, gloves, and boots is safer if there is any contact with floodwater. Homeowners must avoid wading in or coming in contact with standing floodwater. The floodwater may be contaminated and contain dangerous objects that can cause injuries. Downed electricity lines in the water are a serious threat as they can cause electrocution. Flood restoration services will be done by personnel who are trained and have the equipment to clean up after floods safely.
Steps to be followed when returning home after a flood
Inspect the exteriors and interiors to identify any damage to the structure caused by the flood that may lead to harm. Weakened structures can collapse and fall, causing injury.
No children or adults with respiratory problems must be allowed in a flooded home. There may be mold that can trigger health issues.
Turn off the electricity supply if it is safe to do so. Otherwise, it must be done by a professional. Homeowners must refrain from coming into contact with or using electrical equipment or components that may have been exposed to water.
Avoid using matches or cigarette lighters to provide light, as any gas trapped in the building can be inflammable. Battery-powered lights can be used.
If possible, the source of water can be turned off or sealed.
Homeowners who have flood insurance can call their insurers. Confirm if restoration work can start before the adjuster arrives.
Documenting the flood damage by taking photos or videos before any cleaning or flood restoration work starts is very important. Using flood water for anything, including washing dishes or cooking, is not allowed. Homeowners must check with local authorities before using the home water supply. Bottled, boiled, or treated water must be used until the water supply is back. Any food or water that has come into contact with flood water must be disposed of.
The above steps are just some basic steps that help immediately after the flood. The flood damage needs to be restorative work and clean up. A professional flood restoration service is better than a DIY job because flooding brings contaminated water, which needs to be handled with precautions. SERVPRO® of Central & West Plano handles flood restoration services in Deerfield, TX, and surrounding areas exceptionally well. The highly trained technicians provide emergency services 24/7. The SERVPRO team is always prepared to mitigate losses and use the right technology to perform efficient flood restoration services. Flood Restoration 101: How to Check Your Home for Storm Damage
Blog Summary: SERVPRO of Central & West Plano explains how to check for storm damage in homes.
Data from the National Centers For Environmental Information says there were 25 storm-related disasters in the US between 2018 and 2019. These damages cost over a billion dollars. Storm damage can be caused by sudden changes in weather patterns. The risk of flood damage has increased over the years in the US. Immediate attention from flood restoration services is necessary to limit further damage and reduce costs incurred.
Adverse weather conditions like severe thunderstorms, hurricanes, heavy rainfall, or blizzards can all lead to flood damage. Any disturbances in the environment or atmosphere that lead to severe weather can be termed storms. There are different types of storms like thunderstorms, snowstorms, rainstorms, or strong windstorms. However, flooding can also happen due to causes within a building like burst and leaking pipes, malfunctioning appliances, sewer backups, etc.
Flood restoration involves the steps of removing water, decontamination of the affected area, and restoring and repairing the building. Flood water is considered to be contaminated and the water damage it causes is categorized accordingly. SERVPRO® of Central and West Plano provides restoration services to homes and businesses in Deerfield, TX, that have sustained damage from storms and flooding. This company has highly trained technicians who respond immediately to emergencies and have the experience, expertise, and training to conduct flood restoration fast, safely, and meticulously. In this article, SERVPRO of Central and West Plano shares how a home can be checked for signs of storm damage.
Heavy rains, high winds, and lightning can all lead to storm damage to homes. Water damage can occur easily as the risk for roof and window damage is high. Sometimes the damage may not be easily visible, and the signs of storm damage may remain hidden. Identifying damage and starting flood restoration as soon as possible can limit further damage, help maintain the safety of the structure, and reduce associated costs. Storm damage can be assessed by checking the following:
1. Inspecting the roof
The roof is a prime target for storm damage. It can get damaged by heavy rainfall, hailstorms, wind, and objects carried by air falling on it. Holes in the roof, raised or missing shingles, debris like leaves accumulated in the gutters, and damage to the chimney are signs of storm damage.
2. Check the exteriors of the walls
Walls must be checked carefully for signs of damage. Some signs may not be immediately noticeable. Spider pattern of cracks (fine cracks that radiate from a central point), splits in the wall, wall paint that is chipped, small dents or holes, and damaged or missing sidings may indicate storm damage. Any damp patches on the interior or exterior of walls must also be noted.
3. Inspect windows
During storms, glass can break due to strong winds or airborne objects striking against windows. The shattered glass can allow external elements to enter the home and also cause damage to the home interiors. There can be damage that is not easily visible. Fine cracks, loose window panes, and damages like small dents and cracks, to the window frames, must be noted. In case windows are damaged, boarding up with wood planks will help protect the home from water and unwanted elements.
4. Examine entry doors
Strong winds and heavy flooding can put a strain on doors. They can fall off their hinges and develop cracks or holes. The home is then left exposed to outside elements.
5. Assess the outdoor structures or outbuildings
Decks, patios, porches, fences, and other outdoor structures can get damaged in storms. Any water pooling or damp spots near the structures must be noted. The structure must be examined for missing planks, railings and steps, cracking and chipping, and warped boards. The structures must be cleared of any debris and any loose structures secured.
6. Examine crawl spaces
Flood water and moisture can remain in a crawl space after a storm. If left unattended for a long time, this can lead to severe water damage. This is a place where flood damage restoration services are necessary. Leaking from roofs and through doors, and leaky pipes can cause water to get into the crawl space. Signs of storm damage to the crawl space include musty odors, pests, sagging floors, sloping floors, etc.
7. Inspect trees
Trees must be checked for loose or hanging branches after a storm. This is a safety risk and they may need to be trimmed.
Storms can be overwhelming for families. Minor repairs may be done by homeowners, but any significant storm damage may need flood restoration experts. Flooding after a storm is better handled by flood restoration professionals. Flash floods can bring walls of water from 10 to 20 feet high.
Flooding can be caused by spring thawing (snow and frozen grounds melting in the spring), heavy rains, snow melt runoffs, flash floods, and mudflows.
Floods are the most widespread natural disaster aside from wildfires.
A 2,000 square foot home undergoing 12 feet of water damage could cost more than $50,000 to repair.
Here are a few supplies you need to prepare for a flood:
Stock up on First Aid items
Non-perishable foods
Three gallons of water per person for 3 days
Battery operated radio for weather reports
Extra batteries
Personal hygiene necessities

Did you know tsunamis can hit any U.S. coast? While they are more likely to hit states on the Pacific coastline or in the Caribbean, it is good to know what to do if a tsunami does strike where you live, or even where you may vacation. Ready.gov says “tsunamis, also known as seismic sea waves (mistakenly called “tidal waves”), are a series of enormous waves created by an underwater disturbance such as an earthquake, landslide, volcanic eruption, or meteorite.” Areas within a mile of the coast and less than 25 feet above sea level have a greater risk of being hit. As with any emergency, be sure you have a plan.
Know the evacuation plan and move inland or to higher ground and avoid the beach. “The first wave may not be the last or the largest,” according to the National Weather Service. For more information on preparing for a tsunami, visit ready.gov/tsunamis.

* Winterize your vehicle and keep the gas tank full. A full tank will keep the fuel line from freezing.
* Insulate your home by installing storm windows or covering windows with plastic from the inside to keep cold air out.
*Maintain heating equipment and chimneys by having them cleaned and inspected every year.
*Bring pets/companion animals inside during winter weather. Move other animals or livestock to sheltered areas with non-frozen drinking water.
*Running water, even at a trickle, helps prevent pipes from freezing.
* All fuel-burning equipment should be vented to the outside and kept clear. Cold-Related Emergencies
* Frostbite and hypothermia are two dangerous and potentially life-threatening emergencies. Learn how to care for these emergencies by taking a first aid class.
* Go to a designated public shelter if your home loses power or heat during periods of extreme cold.
* Avoid driving when conditions include sleet, freezing rain or drizzle, snow or dense fog. *
Before tackling strenuous tasks in cold temperatures, consider your physical condition, the weather factors and the nature of the task. * Protect yourself from frostbite and hypothermia by wearing warm, loose-fitting, lightweight clothing in several layers. Stay indoors, if possible.
* Help people who require special assistance such as elderly people living alone, people with disabilities and children.
* Check on your animals and make sure that their access to food and water is not blocked by snow drifts, ice or other obstacles. If possible, bring them indoors. Caution: Carbon Monoxide Kills * Never use a generator, grill, camp stove or other gasoline, propane, natural gas or charcoal-burning devices inside a home, garage, basement, crawlspace or any partially enclosed area. Locate unit away from doors, windows and vents that could allow carbon monoxide to come indoors.
* The primary hazards to avoid when using alternate sources for electricity, heating or cooking are carbon monoxide poisoning, electric shock and fire.
* Install carbon monoxide alarms in central locations on every level of your home and outside sleeping areas to provide early warning of accumulating carbon monoxide.
* If the carbon monoxide alarm sounds, move quickly to a fresh air location outdoors or by an open window or door.
* Call for help from the fresh air location and remain there until emergency personnel arrive to assist you.

In 2013, there were seven weather and climate disaster events with losses exceeding $1 billion each across the United States.
These events included five severe weather and tornado events, a major flood event, and the western drought/heat wave. Overall, these events killed 109 people and had significant economic effects on the areas impacted.
Knowing your risk of severe weather, taking action and being an example are just a few steps you can take to be better prepared to save your life and assist in saving the lives of others.
Know Your Risk: The first step to becoming weather-ready is to understand the type of hazardous weather that can affect where you live and work, and how the weather can impact your business and your family.
Take Action: Take the next step in severe weather preparedness by creating a communications plan for your home and business.
Be an Example: Once you have taken action to prepare for severe weather, share your story with co-workers and family and friends on Face book or Twitter. Your preparedness story will inspire others to do the same.
Wireless Emergency Alerts (WEA) are emergency messages sent by authorized government-alerting authorities through your Mobile carrier.
Government partners include local and state public safety agencies, FEMA, and the FCC, the Department of Homeland Security, and the National Weather Service.
Alerts received at the right time can help keep you safe during an emergency. With WEA, alerts can be sent to your mobile device when you may be in harm's way, without need to download an app or subscribe to a service. WEA may be used to share:
* Extreme weather warnings
*Local emergencies requiring evacuation or immediate action.
AMBER Alerts.
Presidential Alerts during a National Emergency.
A WEA will look like a text message. Visit www.ctia.org/wea to learn more about Wireless Emergency Alerts, including how to determine if your mobile device is WEA capable.
