How to deal with smoke damage after a fire

Fires can be incredibly devastating, and unfortunately, even after the fire is extinguished there is still work to be done. Smoke damage can linger long after the fire has been put out and must be dealt with appropriately in order to prevent further damage to your home (and your health). Let’s take a look at how to deal with smoke damage after a fire.

Clean Up Quickly

The first step in dealing with smoke damage is to clean up quickly and thoroughly. The longer you wait, the more time the smoke will have to penetrate into your walls and furniture, making it harder to clean up later on. If you are able, begin cleaning as soon as possible. If not, hire a professional smoke and fire restoration company that specializes in post-fire clean up for the best results.

Remove All Contaminated Materials

Once you’ve started cleaning up the area, you must remove all materials that have been contaminated by soot or smoke particles. This includes furniture, clothing, carpets and any other items that may have been impacted by the fire and/or smoke. It is important to note that many of these items cannot be salvaged, and they may need to be thrown away in order to prevent further contamination of your home or belongings.

That being said, smoke damage restoration companies often specialize in contents cleaning, as well. This means that they typically have access to large industrial cleaning equipment that can effectively clean smoke damaged content and remove the odor from the material. This is usually limited to clothing, rugs, blankets, and other similar items.

Use Professional Cleaning Equipment

When it comes to dealing with smoke damage it is important that you use professional-grade cleaning equipment and products. Over-the-counter cleaners may not effectively remove all of the soot residue from your walls or furniture – which would leave behind an unpleasant smell or discoloration that could prove difficult to remove later on down the line. Professionals will have access to powerful cleaning agents that can quickly break down soot residue without damaging surfaces or leaving behind any unpleasant odors.

Dealing with smoke damage after a fire can seem like an overwhelming task. However, by following our tips above – including quick clean up, removal of contaminated materials and using professional-grade cleaning equipment – you'll be well on your way towards restoring your home back to its pre-fire state in no time! Be sure to consult with a professional whenever possible for expert advice on how best to proceed when dealing with smoke damage after a fire.

What to throw away after smoke damage?

If you’ve experienced a house fire or smoke damage, it may be difficult to know where to begin. It can be overwhelming to take stock of what was damaged and to safely decide what to clean and what to toss. To help steer you in the right direction, let’s take a look at what to throw away after smoke damage and why.

Clothing and Bedding

Clothing, bedding, and any other fabrics are likely to have absorbed the smell of smoke, as well as any other toxins in the air during a fire. Even if they don’t have any visible signs of damage, you likely need to toss them out. The same goes for curtains and carpets; these will likely retain too much odor even with thorough cleaning efforts.

Keep in mind – there are professional restoration companies that specialize in content cleaning. In some cases, they can use specialized equipment to professionally clean linen, garments, and rugs/curtains. They can remove toxins and odors in the process. If you’re at all curious if some of your household items can be preserved, contact a restoration company and ask about their content cleaning services.

Food Items

Any food item that has been exposed to smoke must be thrown away immediately, as it could contain dangerous toxins from the smoke itself or from flame retardants used in furniture or carpeting. This includes canned goods that were not opened before the fire occurred; their seals may have been broken by the heat of the flames or contaminated by smoke particles entering through cracks in the packaging. Open food packages should also go into the trash as they might also contain toxins from the fire.

Personal Care Items

Personal care items such as makeup, lotion, shampoo, and toothpaste will often absorb odors from smoke exposure and cannot be saved. Make sure that all personal care products are disposed of safely; never just throw them away in your regular garbage can! Many beauty products contain toxic chemicals that can contaminate water systems if not disposed of properly.  Contact your local waste management department for instructions on how to dispose of hazardous waste properly.

Upholstered Furniture

Upholstered furniture is highly susceptible to smoke damage, especially if it is located close to where the fire occurred. Even if these items appear undamaged, they should still be discarded due to the fact that the smoke odor may not be able to be removed. Additionally, if these items were exposed to heat or water during the firefighting efforts, they should also be discarded because of potential mold growth that could occur over time.

Carpeting and Flooring

Carpet and flooring can also suffer extensive damage due to smoke exposure. Carpet fibers can trap odors, which are difficult and expensive to remove. Additionally, carpet padding absorbs water, which provides an ideal environment for mold growth. If your carpets have been exposed to water or smoke, it is best practice to have them professionally removed and replaced with new carpeting or flooring material.

It’s important to understand what types of things need to be discarded after a home has been affected by smoke damage from a fire. The more you know, the more likely it is that you can avoid further damage to your home and yourself. In most situations, contacting a fire damage restoration company is the most ideal solution. They can guide you through the process of restoring your home back to its original state.

What is smoke damage?

1/6/2023 (Permalink)

Fire against a dark backdrop Fire against a dark backdrop

Smoke damage is a type of property damage that can occur when a structure has been exposed to fire or excessive smoke. This type of damage can cause long-term issues if not addressed right away, including corrosion, discoloration, and even permanent loss of items. Understanding what smoke damage is, how it occurs, and the steps to take for fixing it can help you protect your property from further harm.

What is Smoke Damage?

Smoke damage occurs when there is a fire or smoke exposure in an enclosed space. The smoke from the fire combines with the oxygen in the air and produces soot particles that settle on surfaces throughout the area. These particles contain harmful chemicals like carbon monoxide, hydrogen cyanide, and other toxic materials that can cause further damage when left untreated. The longer these particles are allowed to remain on surfaces, the more likely they are to cause corrosion or discoloration over time.

How Can You Identify Smoke Damage?

Identifying smoke damage isn't always easy because it can appear differently depending on the type of surface affected. You may be able to see dark stains or discoloration on walls and ceilings caused by soot particles settling into porous surfaces like wood or fabric. On non-porous surfaces like metal or glass, you may notice a hazy film caused by the oxidation of these materials due to contact with heat from the fire or smoke exposure. Additionally, some items may have an unpleasant smell associated with them due to contact with smoke particles that lingers even after cleaning efforts have been made.

Types of Smoke Damage

Smoke damage is typically divided into two main categories – wet smoke and dry smoke. Wet smoke comes from smoldering fires that burn at lower temperatures for longer periods of time. This type of smoke has a sticky texture that tends to adhere to surfaces more easily than dry smoke does. Dry smoke comes from high-temperature, fast-burning fires. It has a more powdery texture that disperses quickly in the air. Both types can cause significant fire damage if not properly contained and removed.

Cleaning Up Smoke Damage

The first step in cleaning up any kind of fire or smoke damage is to assess the extent of the damage and determine how much needs to be repaired or replaced. If there is significant structural or aesthetic damage, then it may be necessary to call in professional help for repairs or restoration services. Homeowners should also take steps to limit their exposure to airborne particles that are often present after fires or other incidents involving smoke.

Smoke Odor Removal

In addition to physical damage, many homeowners also have to deal with lingering odors left behind by smoke residue. These odors can linger long after the visible signs of fire have been removed, making them difficult—but not impossible—to remove completely. Professional odor removal services use powerful machines that generate ozone gas which breaks down particles in the air and neutralizes odors at their source (while leaving no residue behind on surfaces or fabrics).

Smoke damage is a type of property damage that can result from fires or excessive exposure to smoke in an enclosed space. Understanding how to identify the types of smoke damage can help you understand what’s required to repair any existing damages. Taking proper steps for removing soot particles from affected surfaces (followed by deodorizing any lingering smells) will ensure your home or business location looks as good as new after being exposed to smoke-related issues!

How to clean smoke damage off bricks

1/6/2023 (Permalink)

Lit match Lit match

If you’ve ever been in a house that has had a fire, you know all too well the overpowering smell of smoke and the damage it can cause. While smoke damage is typically seen on walls, ceilings, and furniture, brick structures are also highly susceptible to smoke damage. Fortunately, there are ways to help restore brick structures back to their original condition. Let’s take a look at how to clean smoke damage off bricks.

Identifying Smoke Damage on Brick Structures

Smoke will often cling to surfaces in areas where the fire was most intense or where there were high levels of heat or humidity. You may also see a few spots of discoloration on your brick structure – depending on the type of material and heat exposure experienced during the fire. For example, after being exposed to extreme temperatures during a fire, red bricks may become duller in color while terra cotta may have an orange tint.

Cleaning Smoke Damage Off Bricks

Once you’ve identified where the smoke damage is located, it’s time to start cleaning up the mess! To do this safely and effectively, it’s important to use products specifically designed for cleaning up smoke residue. Using any other type of cleaner could potentially make matters worse (as many regular cleaners contain chemicals that could react with the soot and leave behind an even bigger mess than before).

Some examples of cleaners specifically designed for cleaning up smoke residue include Tri-Sodium Phosphate (TSP) and Oxalic Acid. These types of cleaners are specially formulated to break down soot without damaging the surface beneath it.

Protecting Your Brick Structure from Future Smoke Damage

Next up, it’s important to prevent future residual buildup by sealing off your walls with a sealant (such as silicone caulk or latex paint sealer). This will help protect your bricks over time by preventing further staining due to soot accumulation or dirt build-up (which is caused by moisture or dust particles settling into tiny crevices between brick layers or mortar joints).

It’s also important to note that applying sealants will not stop water from entering through cracks in your wall. But it will help repel dirt and grime, which can lead to discoloration over time due to oxidation.

Cleaning up after a fire isn't an easy task but it's possible if you know what steps to take! Removing smoke effects off bricks requires using specific products that won't react negatively with soot residues left behind by fires--products like Tri-Sodium Phosphate (TSP) and Oxalic Acid are great choices for this purpose.

How to clean smoke damage in your home

1/4/2023 (Permalink)

Smoke damage on kitchen counter Smoke damage on kitchen counter

After a fire, the smell of smoke can linger in your home and soot can sit on your furniture, clothing, and walls. If not taken care of properly, the smoke and soot can cause further damage – both to your home and your family. While it’s extremely important to contact a fire restoration company after a larger fire, there are some DIY steps you can take to clean up very minor smoke damage (ex. smoke damage to the wall inside your fireplace). Let’s break down how to clean smoke damage in your home and how this process can vary from item to item.

Asses the damage caused by the smoke

The first step when cleaning smoke damage is to assess the extent of the damage. This means taking an inventory of all items that were damaged by smoke and soot, as well as any surfaces that need to be cleaned and/or repaired. It’s important to remember that even if something looks undamaged, it may still need to be thrown away because it could contain toxic chemicals.

Depending on the severity of the smoke damage, it may be necessary to contact a professional smoke and fire restoration company. These companies can make sure that your contents and home are restored properly, as well as ensure all harmful chemicals are removed. Even if you do not have a large area damaged by the smoke and soot, it may be worthwhile to contact a professional for expert guidance.

Cleaning and Sanitizing Surfaces

Once you have identified which surfaces need to be cleaned or sanitized, it’s time to get down to business. You should start with a gentle detergent and warm water mixture applied directly onto affected areas with a sponge or cloth.

Make sure all surfaces are treated thoroughly and rinsed properly after cleaning; this will help avoid any permanent staining from the soot and ash left behind by the fire. For extra protection against odors caused by smoke, try using an enzymatic cleaner designed specifically for this issue; these cleaners work by breaking down odor molecules instead of just masking them with scents like most traditional air fresheners do.

During this process, you’ll want to wear protective gear and masks. This process can be harmful to your health and the health of others if the proper precautions are not taken.

Cleaning Walls and Ceilings

Use a mild detergent mixed with water and apply it directly onto the surface of your wall and ceiling with a soft cloth or sponge. Make sure not to scrub too hard as this could cause further damage. When finished, rinse the area with plain water and allow it to dry completely before painting or wallpapering over it.

In some cases, severe smoke damage and wet soot cannot easily be removed from walls and ceilings, and it is often necessary to remove and reconstruct.

Cleaning Floors

To start cleaning your floors, sweep them thoroughly using a broom or vacuum cleaner with a HEPA filter attachment. Once this is done, mix together a mild detergent and warm water, and mop the floors using a soft-bristled brush or mop head. Rinse the area with plain water when finished and allow it time to dry completely before replacing floor coverings.

Cleaning Furniture

To clean furniture affected by smoke damage, you will need to use an upholstery cleaner specifically designed for removing soot stains from fabrics such as furniture fabric or curtains. You may also need an ammonia-based cleaner for leather furniture if necessary. Make sure not to saturate any fabric while cleaning as this could cause further staining or discoloration of the material itself.

Allow areas to dry completely

It is important to make sure that all affected areas are completely dry before applying any new paint or treatments; otherwise they won't stick correctly. If necessary, use fans or dehumidifiers (you can rent these if needed) in order to speed up drying time before beginning repairs and reconstruction.

Cleaning up after a house fire can be a daunting task but it doesn't have to be overwhelming if you take it one step at a time. By following these tips for cleaning up after a house fire, you should find yourself back in your home much sooner than expected! And remember, for larger house fires that are contained to a few square feet, it is likely that you’ll need to contact a professional fire restoration company. This is especially important for the long-term health of you and your family, as well as the long-term structural integrity of your home.

Emergency Board Up and Roof Tarping

Did you know that some insurance companies deny at least part of a fire insurance claim if it finds that a property owner did not try to protect their property from secondary damage?  This can be avoided by hiring SERVPRO of Plano's reconstruction contractor to do emergency board up and roof tarping.

After fire damage, many properties experience damaged roofs, windows, doors, and even damaged outer walls.  This type of damage makes a building susceptible to secondary damage. Weather can come in and cause water damage and mold.  Easy access also makes it easy for theft to occur.

For these reasons, we recommend emergency fire damage services as soon as the fire department has left.

We can:

  • Attach a weatherproof roof tarp.
  • Board up damaged doors, windows, and outer walls.
  • Preform an emergency packout
  • Send a security guard to protect your property 24 hours a day.

After your property is secure, we can inspect your property and begin fire damage cleanup and remediation services as well as rebuilding your property.

Fire Safety

5/10/2022 (Permalink)

According to the National Fire Protection Association, firefighters respond to a home fire every 79 seconds.

Simple steps can be taken throughout the home to reduce the risk of fire and injury/loss of life:

Working smoke alarms should be found in each bedroom, outside each sleeping area, and on every level of the building are working properly and the batteries are good?

Be sure fire extinguishers are available on every level of the home and that each household member knows how to use them?

Reduce the risk of fire outside of the home by removing dying or dead trees and shrubs and by keeping dry brush and debris at least 30 feet away from the home.

Keep gutters, roof, and eaves clear of debris? Be sure any candles in the home are placed away from curtains and other furniture, as well as out of reach of children and pets.

Consider using safer alternatives such as flameless candles.

Fire Safety

1/7/2022 (Permalink)

SERVPRO of Plano is here to help! Please call us at 972-403-9004 for a free estimate.

Have Questions About Fire, Smoke, or Soot Damage? Call Today – (972)403-9004

Every fire damage event is a little different and requires a unique solution, but the general process stays the same. The steps listed below illustrate our process for the “typical” fire damage emergency.

Step 1: Emergency Contact

The restoration process begins when you call us. Our representative will ask questions regarding the fire damage event that will help us respond immediately with the appropriate equipment and resources.

Step 2: Inspection and Fire Damage Assessment

We carefully inspect and test adjoining rooms of your property to determine the extent of the fire, smoke, and soot damage. This step is crucial to developing a plan of action.

Step 3: Immediate Board-Up and Roof-Tarp Service

Fire damage can often compromise windows, walls, and roofs. To maintain security and to protect against further damage, we can board up missing windows and walls and place tarps on damaged roofs.

Step 4: Water Removal and Drying (if water damage is present)

The water removal process begins almost immediately and removes the majority of the water. We then use dehumidifiers and air movers to remove the remaining water and complete the drying process.

Step 5: Removal of Smoke and Soot from All Surfaces

We use specialized equipment and techniques to remove smoke and soot from ceilings, walls, and other surfaces.

Step 6: Cleaning and Sanitizing

We clean, sanitize, and disinfect all of the restorable items and structures that were damaged by the fire. We use a variety of cleaning techniques to restore your belongings to pre-fire condition. We’re also trained to remove odors using industrial air scrubbers and fogging equipment.

Step 7: Restoration

Restoration is the final step—getting your home or business to its pre-fire condition. Restoration may involve minor repairs, such as replacing drywall, painting, and installing new carpet; or it may entail major repairs such as the reconstruction of various areas or rooms in a home or business.

Odor Removal and Deodorization after Fire Damage

8/2/2021 (Permalink)

As experts in deodorization, SERVPRO of Plano is trained to identify and eliminate offensive odors which include Fire and Smoke damages.

These odors can come from a number of sources both inside and outside a structure.

SERVPRO teaches IICRC technical classes in the proper removal of odors. Masking and other shortcuts don't work when your odor problem is serious or persistent.

We have the training and equipment to identify and eliminate these offensive odors. By identifying the cause of the odor, and determining the conditions where it contacts surfaces, the odor can often be removed over time without a trace.

Our technicians have access to several odor removal products capable of penetrating surfaces to neutralize an unpleasant odor thoroughly.

The science of identifying and eliminating odors can be a tricky thing, so give us a call, and leave the restoration to us.

House fire caused by fireworks

2/8/2021 (Permalink)

It has happened plenty of times... especially when there is debris in the gutters, like dried leaves and twigs. SERVPRO of Plano has cleaned up many fires each year caused by fireworks.

Just because it is an asphalt roof shingle, doesn't mean it won't catch fire... just think... what is asphalt? It is a petroleum based product, on a hot roof, and if it then comes in contact with sparks from a firework, you potentially have a problem.

Fireworks were also banned in central Texas this year due to the extremely dry/drought conditions. 72% of Texas is in the highest drought category this year.... whew!

Most of the area cities also cancelled their public firework displays due to the extreme fire danger.

If a FIRE strikes your home call the professionals SERVPRO of Plano 972-403-9004.

Fire damage to your property

2/3/2021 (Permalink)

Did you know?

Hot smoke migrates to cooler areas.

Smoke migrates to upper levels of a structure.

Smoke flows through plumbing systems, using holes around pipes to go floor to floor.

The type of smoke will greatly affect the restoration process.

Even what seems to be a small fire it can cause odors for years to come if the affected areas are not properly cleaned and deodorized or if the burned material is not addressed properly and removed.

Fire, smoke and soot damage in your home or business can create unpleasant and potentially permanent problems if not addressed properly.

As various materials burn, the smoke produced travels throughout the structure, leaving odorous residues and deposits on surfaces and in hard-to-reach places. Unless fast, professional action is taken, these residues and deposits can cause permanent damage to contents and may result in resurfacing odors.

Our SERVPRO team members know how to handle a fire loss and have received the proper training needed to address your loss.

SERVPRO is a preferred vendor on all of your major insurance companies lists.

Heavy fire damage to apartment

Heating Safety Tips:

1) Keep anything flammable at least three feet away from heating equipment, like the furnace, fireplace, wood stove or a portable space heater.

2) Have a three foot “kid-free zone” around open fires and space heaters. Make sure the fireplace has a sturdy screen to stop sparks from flying into the room. Ashes should be cool before putting them in a metal container. Keep the container a safe distance away from your home.

3) Remember to turn portable heaters off when leaving the room or going to bed.

4) Test smoke alarms monthly. Always use the right kind of fuel, specified by the manufacturer, for fuel. Have heating equipment and chimneys cleaned and inspected every year by a qualified professional.

Apartment fire loss

According to the National Fire Protection Association, firefighters respond to a home fire every 79 seconds.

Simple steps can be taken throughout the home to reduce the risk of fire and injury/loss of life:

Be sure fire extinguishers are available on every level of the home and that each household member knows how to use them?

Reduce the risk of fire outside of the home by removing dying or dead trees and shrubs and by keeping dry brush and debris at least 30 feet away from the home.

Step 1: Emergency Contact

The restoration process begins when you call us. Our representative will ask questions regarding the fire damage event that will help us respond immediately with the appropriate equipment and resources.

Fire or smoke damages to your home or business

3/11/2019 (Permalink)

When damage strikes your home

Heating Safety Tips

1/8/2019 (Permalink)

If your property does suffer fire or smoke damage Please contact SERVPRO of Plano at 972-403-9004 for your free estimate.

9/26/2018 (Permalink)

* Wipe soot from chrome kitchen/bathroom faucets, trim and appliances, then protect these surfaces with a light coating of lubricant.

* If heat is off during winter, pour RV antifreeze in sinks, toilet bowls, holding tanks and tubs to avoid freezing pipes and fixtures.

FIREWORKS will cause damage

7/5/2018 (Permalink)

Candle Burning Safety Tips

2/7/2018 (Permalink)

Here are a 10 tips to keep your home safe while using candles.

  1. Young children should be taught to stay away from lit candles. Keep lit candles out of reach of children and pets. Candle lighting is not an appropriate activity for small children, so keep all matches and lighters out of the sight and reach of children. Older children can learn to use them under adult supervision.
  2. Burn candles away from drafts, other heat sources, and all flammable objects or materials. In other words, never use candles near windows or exits.
  3. Keep burning candles away from curtains, wrapping paper, combustible decorations and displays, flammable liquids, and aerosol sprays, such as hair spray, which can explode. Never allow a candle flame to touch any glass surface. Don't burn candles more than four hours at a time.
  4. Unattended candles are an invitation to disaster; so don't forget to snuff out candles before leaving the room or going to bed. Blowing candles out doesn't do the trick: Extinguish them by wetting the wick. Here are some tips for burning candles safely:
  5. Candles other than jar candles must be used in an appropriate non-tipping, non-flammable holder. Make sure that candle containers and holders are made from tempered glass or have a proper glaze. All candles should be placed on a safe, heat-resistant dry surface. If possible, place glass chimneys or shades over them. For Christmas luminaires, use 15-hour votive candles in holders, placed in paper bags filled with at least 2 inches of sand. The candle must be of a size that will allow adequate space between the candles and bag so as not to ignite the bag.
  6. Remove labels and tags from candles before burning.
  7. Keep wicks trimmed to ¼ inch at all times. This inhibits smoking and carbon build-up at the tip of the wicks and provides a cleaner burn.
  8. Sometimes a layer of liquid wax forms that causes the wick to fall to the side. To maintain an even burn, keep the wick centered. This will also protect the candleholder, since a flame that's too close for too long may crack the holder.
  9. Keep the wax pool free of foreign objects such as wick trimmings and matches. They will interfere with proper burning and are flammable.
  10. Extinguish taper or pillar candles when they get within 2 inches of their holders. Discontinue use of containers candle when ½" of wax remains.                                  If you experience a smoke damage from a candle please call SERVPRO of Plano at 972-403-9004

How to Prevent Spontaneous Combustion of Oil Soaked Rags

12/22/2017 (Permalink)

Garage fire from DIY project

Rags are the most common type of Spontaneous Combustion fires.

These fires are caused by improperly disposed of oil and stain soaked rags. Examples of these products are oil-based paints and stains, teak and linseed oils, varnishes and polyurethane, paint thinners, etc.

Spontaneous combustion of oily rags occurs when rag or cloth is slowly heated to its ignition point through oxidation. A substance will begin to release heat as it oxidizes. If this heat has no way to escape, like in a pile, the temperature will raise to a level high enough to ignite the oil and ignite the rag or cloth. The fire from this can spread quickly to other combustibles and cause great damage to your home or property.

Prevention of spontaneous combustion fires begins with good housekeeping. A clean work area can prevent a fire from spreading and getting bigger by not allowing the fire fuel to burn. Also understanding the potential for self-heating of rags soiled with oils such as linseed oil and turpentine is a key step in eliminating these preventable fires. To properly and safely dispose of oily rags, Bend Fire Department recommends the following steps:

Use a container with a tight fitting lid. A metal can is preferable but a plastic can or zip lock bag can work if nothing else is available.

Place soiled and used rags inside and then fill the rest the way with water, seal the top and do not open it. This will prevent the oils from oxidizing, and thus keeping the rags from heating up and igniting. Contact your local garbage disposal company for their policy on disposal of the can and contents. Some companies will permit disposal in regular household trash.

Please consider the correct way to dispose of oil soaked rags.

Kitchen Caution Stay Safe This Holiday Season

12/13/2017 (Permalink)

Kitchen stove fire

Each holiday season, families gather to celebrate  by preparing a delicious feast, but if you don’t practice safe cooking habits, your holiday could become hazardous very quickly.

According to the National Fire Protection Association, cooking fires are the number one cause of home fires and home injuries. The leading cause of fires in the kitchen is unattended cooking.

It’s important to be alert to prevent cooking fires.  Be on alert! If you are sleepy or have consumed alcohol don’t use the stove or stovetop.

Stay in the kitchen while you are frying, grilling, boiling, or broiling food.  If you are simmering, baking, or roasting food, check it regularly, remain in the kitchen while food is cooking, and use a timer to remind you that you are cooking.  Keep anything that can catch fire—oven mitts, wooden utensils, food packaging, towels, or curtains—away from the stovetop.

If you have a cooking fire, consider the following safety protocols to help keep you and your family safe.  Just get out! When you leave, close the door behind you to help contain the fire. n Call 9-1-1 or the local emergency number after you leave. n For an oven fire, turn off the heat and keep the door closed.  If you try to fight the fire, be sure others are getting out and you have a clear way out.

Keep a lid nearby when you’re cooking to smother small grease fires. Smother the fire by sliding the lid over the pan and turn off the stovetop. Leave the pan covered until it is completely cooled.
